This weekend Minneapolis based Familia Skateshop opens its doors to their new headquarters complete with a full skatepark after partnering up with California Skateparks. If you haven’t seen the promo video featuring Familia’s co owner Steve Nesser check it out here. Located skating distance from the store, the park has been on the hush hush for a while now but the Familia team is excited to finally opens its doors to the public this weekend. We got a chance to catch up Familia Skateshop’s Dennis Burdick on the new park, what’s been going on with Familia and also got an inside look in what brands and trends to look out for this spring. Oh.. and where to grub while you’re in the neighborhood.
How long has Familia been open and how long have you been at the Minneapolis location?
We have been at this location for 3 years now.
What is the single best selling brand in the past 6 months?
Here in the midwest that changes daily! I would say Nike or vans for shoes, DLX, Girl, The High 5 for hardgoods, HUF & Fourstar for apparel.
You mentioned all of your spring orders are on their way, what trend are you most excited for this spring? And what trend do you see fading?
Anything from HUF, there’s a lot of good things for spring/summer this year from all brands! We have new brands we’ve never carried before coming in too, as far as things fading I like that vulc is slowing down and cup sole is returning!
What influences you in choosing the brands you carry?
Who’s involved, what they do for skateboarding, quality, everything we have in the store we wear, skate or rep
You guys mix a lot of art & music with your skateshop. What has been one of the most memorable shop events and are there any plans for future store events soon?
The one that I would say for me was last years “day of” which is our yearly celebration on the day we first opened. Last year’s was a weekend packed from start to finish : Fri: True heads release party, Sat: Art show featuring Clint Peterson, Todd Bratrud and Kenny Anderson and then to finalize it Sun: ramp session at Rhyme Sayers “Soundset” which featured De La Sol!
This year is off to a great start as far as events we are opening the Familia Headquarters on April 7th which is our park a few blocks away from the shop. We already have some great events on the bill for later this year!
What can we expect in the future? Can you tell us anything about this announcement for April 7th?
All I can say is that it will be an excellent future with some big things poppin! It’s our headquarters that will also feature a public indoor skatepark located in Minneapolis, skating distance from the store.
Food & booze question… Best grub & bar close to the shop?
Anything else you want to share with us? Shout outs? Quote of the day? What you had for breakfast?
Thank you Christine & Agenda for everything you do! I had coffee for breakfast, “Get hyped, Stay Hyped”
